Celebrated National Geographic photojournalist Joel Sartore continues his Photo Ark quest, photographing species around the world that are escaping extinction thanks to human efforts.

Joel Sartore’s quest to photograph all the animal species under human care celebrates its 15th year with this glorious and heartwrenching collection of photographs. The animals featured in these pages are either destined for extinction or already extinct in the wild but still alive today, thanks to dedication of a heroic group committed to their continued survival. From the majestic Sumatran rhinoceros to the tiny Salt Creek tiger beetle, Sartore’s photographs bring us eye to eye with the kaleidoscopic diversity of shapes, colors, personalities, and attitudes of the animal world.

In these vivid pages, Sartore singles out the species most likely to disappear in the next decades, as well as some that have already been lost. Alongside these indelible images are the words of scientists and conservationists who are working to protect and restore populations of endangered species. With Sartore’s distinctive portrait photography, he invites us to look closer–and to care more.

Disappearing

In this chapter we meet animals who are disappearing before our eyes. As dire as their situations may be, what these creatures tell us—if we listen—is that their stories mustn’t end here. Disappearing need not be the same as being gone.

Disappearing

wolf wolf

Red Wolf

After being declared extinct in the wild by 1980, red wolves had a modestly successful reintroduction in North Carolina, peaking at more than 150 wild wolves by the early 2000s. After pushback from landowners, the wild population was reduced to around 40, while more than 200 wolves live in captive-breeding facilities.

MonkeyMonkey

Grey-shanked douc langur

In 2014, a team of scientists discovered a new, large population of grey-shanked doucs in Vietnam’s Quang Nam province. Estimated at about 180 animals, it’s only the second population known to have more than 100 doucs living together.

pigpig

Visayan warty pig

When threatened, Visayan warty pigs will raise the hairy mane of bristles on their back to seem larger, forming an impressive mohawk.

Fading

Many of the animals we meet in this chapter are not famous. But it shouldn’t matter. They tell us stories of resilience.

The imprints these animals leave on our planet may have grown faint, but they’re still here. There’s still time to make those marks brighter, stronger, clearer.

Fading

FishFish

Bluemask darter

These colorful fish can be found in the sand- and gravel-strewn beds of small creeks and tributaries of Tennessee’s Cumberland River. Deteriorating water quality due to pesticide and mining runoff means their relatively small habitat is growing even smaller.

Alligator LizardAlligator Lizard

Arboreal alligator lizard

Dwelling in the bromeliad flowers of cloud forests, this Mexican lizard is protected in its home country but has been threatened by the international pet trade, leading to overharvesting.

LizardLizard

Miyako grass lizard

This small lizard is found in about 200 square kilometers of the Miyako Islands of Japan. The introduction of weasels and peacocks to these islands has created a new predator for the Miyako grass lizard.
